STEM Ambassadors sum up benefits of programme for science minister

The Right Honourable David Willetts MP, the Minister of State for Universities and Science, had his mathematics skills put to the test by STEM Ambassadors at the Cheltenham Science Festival.

The STEM Ambassadors Programme, funded by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, involves more than 21,000 volunteers who inspire young people in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Mr Willetts thanked the STEM Ambassadors from Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation Systems, BMT, Magnox North and GCHQ that he met at the festival.

“It’s key to this country that our young people have an interest in science and that’s why we thank our STEM Ambassadors for making this happen. We are all in their debt,” Mr Willetts said.

Pat Langford, STEMNET’s Programmes Director, said enthusiastic ambassadors worked with more than half a million young people in the last year alone.

“STEM Ambassadors support young people and teachers in a huge number of ways, including careers support, mentoring, and STEM Clubs. The maths puzzle game that the STEM Ambassadors challenged the minister with is just one out of thousands of activities,” Pat said.

And how did Mr Willetts do in the maths test? Extremely well as you’d expect!
