Lifelab

What do you actually do?

I look at learning and memory, and how they can be improved.

What is the name of your company?

University of Oxford

How did you get to where you are now?

I wanted to do a PhD because I enjoy learning and I like my subject. There was lots of competition for the studentships I applied for, but I was offered one of the four I applied for. There weren't many other routes I could have followed to get where I am now, though It's quite usual to get a Master's degree before applying for a PhD.

What do you like best about your job?

I like working with others, which makes my work great as I have to work together with other people in the lab. Also, it's really handy that I can work pretty much when I want to. Because I have to present my work to the scientific community and find out about other people's work, it's usual to attend conferences around the world.

What would your top tips be to a 16-year old considering working in this field?

A levels are a must. Biology is extremely helpful, and Chemistry and Maths are highly desirable for this area.

What would your top tips be to a 18-year old considering working in this field?

A university degree in biology, physiology, zoology, neurology or psychology would be most useful for my work.
