Lifelab

What do you actually do?

I am a Design engineer for a research council which means I get to do the mechanical design for a wide range of equipment which is used in physics experiments.

What is the name of your company?

STFC Rutherford Appleton Labs

How did you get to where you are now?

I have broken my service for Rutherford with a short period working for a rail company sorting out warranty claims. This told me that I wanted to do more with an interest for the experimental as this is different all the time.

What do you like best about your job?

I like the fact that the experiments are all different and that you never have to design the same thing twice. I get to travel with the collaborations and work at other institutes. I work as part of a team, these are of different sizes depending on the project.

What would your top tips be to a 16-year old considering working in this field?

There are many different ways of getting here and you have to choose the one best for you but if you cannot get on with lots of different kind of people then it is not the job for you. Also as a male dominated field it is good if you can relate to them on a level playing field.

Tell us something about yourself.

I have a hobby of classic cars. This is me fixing and maintaining them. The joy I get from seeing the engineering that was done when the techniques of the modern manufacturing methods had not be developed. These were the pioneers of the engineering world.
